Building Permits

How long is the permit valid?
All work authorized by a permit must be completed within one (6) months from time of permit approval. Permits may be extended with the approval of the Director of Community & Economic Development on a case by case basis. Not all permits shall warrant an extension.

What is the difference between the plan review fee and the permit fee?
The plan review fee covers the cost of reviewing the plan for compliance with Village Codes. The permit fee covers the cost of processing the permit and the long term archival of each permit.

What do I do with the placard I was given?
Display it in a window of your home/building so it is visible from the street until the final inspection has been completed and approved.


Escrow
What is the purpose of the refundable escrow?
The escrow provides an incentive to complete the work in the approved timeframe and to have the work inspected as required. A fee will be deducted from the escrow for each failed inspection. All remaining escrow funds shall be refunded upon completion of a permit.

When can I expect the escrow to be refunded?
The department will begin processing the refund as soon as the final inspection is approved. Generally, it takes four to six weeks for the refund to reach you. Escrows are only refunded to the payee.

J.U.L.I.E.
Who or what is J.U.L.I.E.?
J.U.L.I.E. stands for "Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators". Upon receiving your call, J.U.L.I.E. will visit your property and mark the location of underground utilities. Call J.U.L.I.E. toll free at (800)-892-0123.

Does the Village locate its underground utilities?
The Department of Public Works is a member of J.U.L.I.E. Upon receiving your call, J.U.L.I.E. will locate underground Village utilities including sewer and water mains, and electrical cables for street lights.

Inspections
When are inspections required?
Required inspections are listed on the building permit information and given to the applicant when the permit is issued.

How do I schedule inspections?
Inspections must be scheduled a minimum of 24 hours in advance by calling 630-350-3413. The address of the work, permit application number, contact information (including phone number and email address) will all be required to schedule an inspection. Anyone requesting an inspection will receive a confirmation email with the date and time of the inspection.

Stop Work Order
When is a Stop Work Order Issued?
A "Stop Work" order is issued for jobs that are not being completed in accordance with the approved plans or for jobs that were started without a permit. Permit fees are doubled for work started without a permit.
